Frequently Asked Questions

The following is a list of questions that are frequently asked by library users. Click on a question to jump to its answer. If you do not find the answer to a question that you have, please feel free to ask the Reference Librarian or other staff for help.

How do I get a library card? In order to obtain a library card, you must show a valid picture ID card and something else that provides proof of where you live. Utility bills, a drivers license, or a printed check are common forms of ID. If you are under 18 years of age, you will need a parent or guardian to show all of the proper ID and sign a statement of responsibility before you can get a card. Anyone of any age is eligible to get a library card.

How do I borrow library books? The Circulation Desk is located just beyond the main entrance of the Library. You can't miss it. The friendly staff there will be able to help you check out books and other library materials. Most of the circulation staff can assist you in either the English or Spanish language.

What are my responsibilities when I checkout library materials? When you get a library card, you sign an agreement to return library materials on-time. You also agree to take care of library materials so that they will be in good shape for the next user. The circulation staff understands that things happen and are always willing to work with you in case materials are late or are in some way damaged. Remember that these materials are purchased with YOUR tax dollars. Treat them as if you bought them yourself!

Where do I return materials? When the library is open, you should return materials to the Circulation desk. Please check materials to make sure that you have not left anything important in books and magazines and that the videos are the ones that you checked out. You would be surprised at the things we have found inside of returned books and videos! When the library is closed, you will need to return materials in the drop box in front of the library.

How do I find books and things? The greatest resource for locating books and things in the library is the Reference Librarian. Please feel free to ask questions of the Reference staff. Helping you find information is the main part of their job. The Reference staff can help you use the catalog and other databases available to you in the Library. A brief tutorial on using the catalog can be found by going back to the main page and clicking on 'Finding Things in the Library.' Printed directions are also available by the computers.

What if a book is not on the shelf or the library doesn't own it? If a book is not on the shelf, check with either the Reference staff or the Circulation staff. They can tell you if it is checked out or missing. If the book is checked out, a reserve can be placed for a small fee. When the book comes in you will be notified. If the book is missing, the Reference Staff can help you determine which libraries nearby have the book or you can request an inter-library loan for a small fee. When a book is requested through interlibrary loan, you will be notified when it arrives.

How can I find out about Local History? The current hours of Local History Room are Mondays and Wednesdays from 2 - 6 pm. The Local History Room has been funded completely by outside donations since 1993. This means that when the money runs out, there will be no regularly scheduled hours. Appointments can be made with the Reference staff to gain access to the room outside of scheduled hours. Under no circumstances will materials be checked out of the Local History Room. Copies can be made of some items.
