San Francisco de Asís (Mission Dolores)

Mission San Francisco de Asís is more commonly known as Mission Dolores because it was located next to a creek, also named Dolores. This was the first Mission not founded by Father Junipero Serra; Father Francisco Palóu founded Dolores in June 1776. While most of the Mission buildings have been sold off, the original church has remained untouched, even by the destructive 1906 earthquake. A large baroque church was built at the site in 1918. Notice the grand towers of the 1918 church and how, in Tupa's painting, they are positioned as if to shelter and protect the original adobe.
